How to Start a Prayer Meeting
Many people are feeling the call to respond to God’s heart and to partner with God’s heart and others of like mind in the place of intercession. However, getting from the “desire to” stage to putting the rubber to the road is where many people stay. I’ve been in this same place and have felt the pain of not knowing what to do, yet having this burning desire to pray on the inside.
Here are some practical steps to help you get from desire to action in calling others join you in starting a prayer meeting.
Find 1-3 People Who Want to Join You in Praying Weekly
Whether in your workplace or on your college campus there are probably a few people who are looking to join others in prayer for their business, school or community. You will need to communicate with 1 or 2 people before you schedule a time and place so that you can know that the prayer meeting is a good time for the first few people committing to pray.
You will also want to be looking for a worship leader. Someone who can play a guitar and sing would be the most helpful as pianos and keyboards are not very mobile and usually require amplification. If you are not able to secure a worship leader right away that is ok. Arrange to bring a cd player and a worship cd. Music will help make the prayer meeting more enjoyable as well as give you a starting point to launch into prayer and point the focus of the meeting to Jesus. However, you will want to keep your eyes out for someone who can join you who can lead worship.
Schedule a Day/Time and Place
Once you have talked to a few people who want to begin praying regularly together you will want to schedule a day, a time and place. Having the day and time scheduled where it is the same each week brings consistency which makes it easier for others to join you as well as for yourself to put it in your schedule and keep your commitment to the prayer meeting.
There is nothing worse than trying to show up to a prayer meeting and finding out that it was on a different day this week, or moved to a different location. Be consistent so that you make it easy for yourself and others to keep the prayer meeting each week.
When scheduling a room keep in mind volume. If you are going to have worship (which I would highly recommend) you should make sure you won’t be disturbing others or have to keep the volume down.
Commit to the Meeting
This seems basic but it is of huge importance. When you start the prayer meeting commit to keeping it and only breaking it in the case of an emergency. You being committed to the prayer meeting will lead by example for others who are praying with you. If you slack in your commitment to the meeting others will do the same.
